Avalanche Safety in Gudauri: What Every Off-Piste Rider Should Know

Gudauri's sidecountry is easy to reach and that is exactly the problem. The terrain traps, the gear you need, and the decisions we make before we leave the boundary.

The single most dangerous thing about Gudauri's off-piste is how easy it is to get into. In most resorts the good sidecountry requires a hike, a traverse, or at least a decision. Here you can be in serious avalanche terrain within ninety seconds of stepping off a lift, still within sight of the piste, without having consciously decided to do anything.

The terrain problem

Gudauri is above the treeline. That means no anchoring, few visual references in flat light, and slopes that hold wind slab across large, uniform faces. The bowls either side of the Sadzele and Kudebi lifts are exactly the aspect and angle, 30 to 40 degrees, leeward, wind-loaded, that produce slab avalanches.

The three things you must carry

  1. Transceiver, worn under a layer, switched on and checked. Not in your backpack.
  2. Probe, at least 240 cm, in an accessible pocket.
  3. Shovel, metal blade. Plastic blades fail in avalanche debris, which sets like concrete.

Carrying the kit is not the same as being able to use it. A transceiver search you have never practised will take you five times as long as one you have, and the survival curve for a fully buried person falls off a cliff after fifteen minutes. Practise in a car park before you need it on a slope.

How to read the morning

Look at the same four things every day: overnight snowfall, wind speed and direction over the previous 48 hours, the temperature trend, and what the snowpack did on the last slope anyone tested. Wind matters more than snowfall here, 20 cm of new snow with a strong westerly loads the eastern bowls far more dangerously than 40 cm with no wind.

  • New snow on a persistent weak layer, stay inbounds
  • Strong wind loading on the aspect you wanted, change aspect, or stay inbounds
  • Rapid warming after a cold spell, go early and finish early
  • Flat light with no visual reference, change the plan regardless of stability
Tracks on a slope are not evidence that it is safe. They are evidence that somebody got away with it once.

Before you leave the piste

If you are heading off-piste, do these things: check the Georgian avalanche bulletin, tell someone your route and return time, never ride a slope alone, go one at a time with a spotter, and treat every metre outside the marked runs as uncontrolled terrain. Our instructors can help you get to know the ski area and read it properly, which is a very different thing from being led into it.

The honest summary

Gudauri gives you Alpine-quality freeride terrain with far less patrol infrastructure, far fewer closures, and no gates telling you where the boundary is. That freedom is the attraction and it is also the risk. Treat every metre outside the marked pistes as uncontrolled terrain, because it is.

Common questions

There is control work on and immediately around the marked pistes. Beyond that, no, the sidecountry is entirely uncontrolled, and there are no rope lines or gates marking where control stops.

Our ski and snowboard programme is instruction rather than backcountry guiding. Lessons include getting to know the ski area and improving the technique that off-piste snow demands, message us about what you want to do and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right people for it.

The National Environmental Agency of Georgia publishes regional bulletins in winter. Coverage is less granular than in the Alps, which is another reason to talk to people who dug a pit that morning.
