Tbilisi to Gudauri: Every Way to Make the Trip
Marshrutka, taxi, private transfer or your own car. What each one costs, how long it really takes, and the one thing nobody tells you about the Jvari Pass in January.
Gudauri sits 120 km north of Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Highway. On a clear summer day that is a two hour drive. In February, after fresh snow on the Jvari Pass, it can be four, or the road can be shut entirely. Here is every realistic option, with honest numbers.
Marshrutka (shared minibus)
The cheapest way up, and the way most Georgians travel. Minibuses leave from Didube station in Tbilisi throughout the morning and cost around 15 GEL per person. They leave when full rather than on a timetable, so aim to arrive before 10:00 in winter.

- Time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on conditions
- Luggage: skis and boards are usually fine but you may be asked for a small extra fee
- Downside: no fixed departure time, and it drops at the roadside rather than your hotel
Shared taxi from Didube
Sitting alongside the marshrutkas at Didube are drivers filling four-seat cars. Around 25 to 35 GEL a head, faster than the minibus, and the driver will usually take you to your actual accommodation. Agree the price before you get in, and agree whether it is per person or per car, this is where most misunderstandings happen.
Private transfer
Between 150 and 220 GEL for the whole car, booked in advance, door to door. If there are three or four of you it works out similar to a shared taxi and you get a fixed pickup time, a driver who will wait if your flight is late, and space for gear. This is what we book for guests arriving on late flights.

Driving yourself
Perfectly doable, with two conditions. Your rental must have winter tyres, check, do not assume, and a lot of Tbilisi rentals do not. And you should be comfortable with a long climb of switchbacks with limited barriers and Georgian overtaking habits.
The Jvari Pass closes several times each winter, sometimes for a day, occasionally for longer. It is almost never announced far in advance.
Check the road status before you leave. The Georgian Roads Department publishes closures, and any Gudauri hotel will know by 07:00 whether the pass is open. If it closes while you are up here, you wait, there is no alternative route.
What time should I leave?
Morning, every time. Snow clearing happens early, the light is better for the mountain sections, and if something goes wrong you have the whole day to solve it. Leaving Tbilisi after 15:00 in midwinter means the last hour of the climb is in the dark.
If you are flying in and out and want to fly with us the same day, give yourself a morning arrival and book the flight for the following day. Weather calls happen at 09:00 and you want a spare day in hand.
Common questions
No direct service. You need to get into the city, Didube station for marshrutkas and shared taxis, or book a private transfer that collects from arrivals.
You can, and plenty of people do for the snowmobile tours or a paragliding flight. Leave by 07:00, plan to be back around 20:00, and accept that a road closure would strand you. For skiing it is not worth it, you lose four hours of the day to the drive.
