When to Visit Gudauri: A Month by Month Breakdown

December through April for snow, June through September for flying over green valleys. What each month actually delivers, including the two weeks most people should avoid.

Gudauri has two seasons that matter and one that surprises people. Here is what to expect month by month, written by someone who has worked every one of them.

December: building

The resort usually opens mid-December. Early in the month the base is thin and the upper lifts may not be running. By the 20th it is normally on, and the week between Christmas and New Year is the single busiest period of the year, prices peak and the lift queues are real.

January and February: the core

The best snow of the year, cold and dry, and the reason freeriders come here. Expect −10 to −20 °C at altitude and genuine storm days. Paragliding still runs on the clear windows, and a winter flight over a completely white valley is a different thing entirely to the summer version.

  • Best snow quality of the season
  • Highest chance of a weather cancellation on any given day, build in a spare day
  • Coldest conditions; proper layers are not optional
  • Quieter than the New Year peak, apart from mid-February half term

March: the sweet spot

If you asked me to pick one month, it would be March. Long days, softer temperatures, a deep base, and far more reliably clear mornings for flying. Late March starts to get slushy on the lower slopes by afternoon, so ride early.

April: winding down

The upper mountain often holds good snow into mid-April while the base turns to spring conditions. Prices drop, crowds vanish. Lift closure dates vary year to year, check before booking flights around a mid-April ski trip.

May: the quiet gap

The lifts are shut, the snow is going, and the alpine flowers have not arrived. Almost nothing runs. If you have a free week and want to see Georgia, spend it in Kakheti instead.

June to September: the underrated season

Most people do not realise Gudauri is a summer paragliding destination, and it is a very good one. Stable morning air, green valleys, wildflowers, and daytime temperatures around 18 to 22 °C at the village. Flights run almost every day and cost the same as in winter.

Common questions

Early December and April for winter sports, and any summer month for paragliding. Avoid 25 December to 7 January, when accommodation roughly doubles.

Yes, and the conditions are often better than in winter. Stable morning thermals, long flying windows and green valley views. Same prices year round.
